This Tree's Got Cojones!
The Cohune Palms are found in the tropical forests of Belize, where the soil is most fertile. The Belizeans use the fronds of this palm for thatch roofs and the stems for making furniture and for the siding on homes, as well as a first aid to stop bleeding when applied as shavings. The nuts (cojones, in Spanish) are processed into oil that is used for cooking, massage oil, and making laundry detergent. The nuts are edible but not very palatable. Tobacco pipes have been handcrafted by boring a hole and inserting a stem into them.
A Pottering Around project installed in the spring of 2007 and photographed here in late summer 2008. This small suburban backyard in Chicago's western suburbs didn't have quite enough patio space to allow for a lounging, dining and cooking areas before we added the low wooden platform and trellis structure. The wooden screen was also added to enclose the space and separate it from the driveway.
